For 15 years, I was in the Corporate world, helping management collate data & generate reports. I dealt with data coming from SAP, and other legacy systems.
The data we used to get was pretty dirty – with terrible formatting, missing values, and codes that didn’t make any sense.
Sometimes it would be in a TEXT file or a CSV file, and at other times we will get a bunch of Excel files with multiple worksheets that made no sense.
After collecting the various customer masters, pricing tables, sales, and shipment data from multiple countries, data had to be cleaned, codes that had to be looked up & data discrepancies removed before we could use it in any sensible way.
All this took days and weeks to get completed. As soon as we’d get the first batch done, another load of new files and dirty data would come in. Everything had to be done step by step, painstakingly.
I used to wonder… is there any other way? How can I save time, how can I cut down on all this cleaning & reporting and spend more time on adding value to the company – by doing some analysis, to help management make sense of the data.
You see, I was reporting the raw data… how much total sales, average sales, total customers etc. But that was it…
Our bosses wanted to see which products sell more than the other, and do weekly comparisons between stores, between categories, and between countries.
They wanted the capability to do what-if analysis and find out where they could save money… pinpoint the problems, stop the leak, and help the company make more money
Back in the days of the late 90s, there was no YouTube… not much Internet help and hardly any useful books on Excel were available… So I started my journey to explore Excel’s functions one by one… by reading the help manual that came with it. And I tried every function by hand, to get to know it well, and master it… sitting alone in the freezing cold server room, processing the data, while waiting for my batch jobs to finish.
And I was amazed at what these Excel functions could do. I began using them to clean the data and was able to save a lot of time. My confidence grew, and I was spending more and more time learning and applying the knowledge of Excel functions to get the management the answers they needed.
I realised that Microsoft added all these useful functions, but did not do a good job of educating the people on using them. Most of the functions are not available in the ribbon or menu. You must know them well, on your own, to use them at all.
But with this newfound ability to analyze data, I was able to get promoted quickly, rising in the ranks faster than my peers.
After leaving my corporate job, I began teaching people the secrets of Excel functions, and have taught over 20,000 students all over the world – from Egypt to Zimbabwe, to Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, Canada, USA to name a few countries…
My classroom workshops are always a big hit. But during the past 2 years of Covid, people stopped coming to classrooms due to massive lockdowns. I then began coaching them over Zoom, because that’s where my customers were expecting to be taught.
But there is a limit to the amount of Zoom you can do… it can be quite draining to conduct such workshops on camera, and I can only conduct 8 to 10 classes a month maximum. The demand keeps increasing.
